Dashworks - Return On Investment

Illustration showing speed of dashworks assisted migration against a traditional project approach

"Let us show you how dashworks could save you at least 20% of your Windows Vista or Windows 7 project expense, and leave a legacy of dynamic information for unparalleled desktop control for the future"

These days it is critical that any software purchase not only provides added value, but can also deliver a fast return on investment. At Juriba, we work with our customers to build business cases based on their individual needs. This in turn accelerates management approval as it is easy to understand exactly where savings will be realised. To illustrate just one area that dashworks can save you money, we have focussed on a typical Windows Vista or 7 migration to illustrate a simple business case. In performing the cost analysis of a Windows platform change, we have drawn from our extensive experience, as well as published research from industry experts such as IDC and Gartner.

Industry average Vista or Windows 7 upgrade expenditure (per user): £910 ($1684) based on 50/50 split between structured-task and knowledge workers in a typically managed environment.

Example

ACME Corp has 10,000 users and 14,000 machines, located across 8 campuses. They are currently running Windows XP, and have created a new image based on Windows Vista that they wish to deploy as their new standard. They are intending to rollout with a targeted project to complete the standardisation within two years. They have 1000 managed applications that are MSI packaged, and the user, computer and software provisions are managed through Active Directory and SMS 2003. On average, ACME refresh their hardware every 3 years, and perform approximately 1,000 rebuilds per year to remediate break/fix calls.

Business case over 2 years based on industry average migration cost per user:

£910 ($1684) * 1,000 users = £9,100,000 ($16,840,000)

Saving

So let's examine where Juriba's dashworks product would save money on this example:

Juriba have been engaged to perform a dashworks install, and have imported all of the relevant user directories, hardware and software inventories, and application package data. The application packages have been analysed to ascertain which are 'Red', 'Amber' and 'Green' for Vista compatibility. The hardware threshold for compatibility has been set by ACME and applied by Juriba to the dashworks engine.

Gartner state that an average 47% of the project costs will be saved if the Windows Vista upgrade project is achieved via hardware attrition (this figure will also apply to machine rebuilds, where you upgrade the device due to a break/fix hardware or software incident). This means that while a user migrated as part of a targeted project effort will cost £910; a user that is migrated via existing business as usual processes will only cost £482.30.

Immediately, dashworks can identify how many users are 'ready' for migration to Vista based on their hardware and software portfolio. It's analysis shows that 85% of the 1000 applications , and 50% of the hardware (5,000 machines) are compatible. By mashing together the relevant data, dashworks shows that 2,500 users can be migrated immediately to Vista as both their applications and hardware are 'Green', and a further 1,500 could be upgraded if given new hardware (applications are 'Green' and hardware is 'Red'). As the hardware is 'Red', it is likely that the machine is in year 3 and due for refresh.

Dashworks not only provides an analysis of which users are 'green' for migration, but also provided a prioritised list of 'red' applications. This means that ACME can focus on remediating the applications that will give them the biggest wins first, allowing them to rapidly increase the number of users that are ready for migration early on.

ACME can now start their migration immediately. Any break/fix event that requires a new build image is now considered for upgrade, and completed where the user displays as 'Green'. Any hardware refresh activity is checked for a 'Green' status and upgraded. Applications are remediated on a highly prioritised basis, turning more and more users 'Green' in the most efficient way. Standardisation happens almost by stealth, enabling their project team to concentrate on the complex issues, VIP customers and reporting the great progress being made.

That provides a massive saving of £1,804,894 over the original business case estimate! Now that's real Desktop Business Intelligence at work.
